This is an intensely personal story set in the Civil War. It is based on real places and real events, but the specific characters and their experiences are fictional. My wife and I made several visits to Harper’s Ferry when we lived in Winchester, Virginia. It’s a picturesque place, and when taking in the sights it is hard to imagine it was once a war-torn village.
